Literature Text

Up in the sky where the world is small,
Big and empty, it holds only the sun.
There she sits watching over us all.
She watches as we play, she watches as we run
There the sun sits, warm and welcome.
I sat one day, refusing to join the fun.
I watched and I listened,
And she called out to me.
From her perch in the sky, the sun spoke sweetly.
Her voice soft but daunting, I could barely sit still.
The sun asked me a simple question;

“Why do you watch?”

I sat and pondered,
I felt silly as I spoke to the sun,
Self-conscious, I responded;

“Because I wished to know what you see.”

I gazed at the people, their fun and games loud and unfaltering

“It’s colorful and bright from where I sit.
You see them now, happy and care-free.”

I turned back to the sun, careful to heed her blinding beauty.

“I wished to know how the sun could see happiness.
I wished to know what lay in the light,
And not what truly hides within their shadows.”

The sun was silent, thoughtful over my words.

“Shadows there may be,
Lies and deceit,
Hurt and betrayal,
Darkness and sadness.
But know this, child;
Light can be shed on anything,
And truth will always prevail.”

Her words gentle and kind,
The sun looked on.
I joined her as we watched,
Thinking over her words.
Perhaps even that which is dark,
Can be saved by the light of the sun.
It needs only to be guided.
